I am still working on Yoda and have come up with a potential solution to my distaste for Luminous Beings are We / Not this Crude Matter. Version 2 of of Yoda is below, with the changes in bold.
Wookiee Warriors – HP 5 – Strong+ Deck – Melee
Premonition
Special
Choose any player. Look at the top 5 cards of that player's draw pile. Reveal up to 5 of them. Put one in that player's hand. Then put up to 4 of them on the bottom of the draw pile in any order and put the rest back on top of the draw pile in any order.
Always in Motion is the Future
Special
Choose you or a teammate. The chosen player flips his/her draw pile over. If a draw pile is face-up, any time a card is removed from the top of that draw pile, the card beneath it is revealed.
Unlearn What You Have Learned
Special
Choose you or a teammate. The chosen player shuffles his/her discard pile into his/her draw pile. Draw 2 cards.
My Ally is the Force / A Powerful Ally it is
A6
Choose you or a teammate. Search that player's draw or discard pile for any Basic Combat card and put it in his/her hand. Then shuffle the draw pile. The first time this card is revealed by a card effect, choose you or a teammate. Search that player's draw or discard pile for any Basic Combat card and put it in his/her hand. Then shuffle the draw pile.
Do or Do Not / There is No Try
A6
Choose you or a teammate. That player gets 1 additional action on his/her next turn. The first time this card is revealed by a card effect, choose you or a teammate. That player gets 1 additional action on his/her next turn.
Luminous Beings are We / Not this Crude Matter
D12
Until the end of the attacker's next turn, attack cards are revealed before a defense card is played (if any). The first time this card is revealed by a card effect, until the end of your next turn, attack cards are revealed before a defense card is played (if any).
4x Premonition
1x Always in Motion is the Future
1x Unlearn What You Have Learned
1x My Ally is the Force / 1x A Powerful Ally it is
1x Do or Do Not / 1x There is No Try
1x Luminous Beings are We / 1x Not this Crude Matter
This isn't a big change from the first draft, but I really like the new defense card. It provides a new and very different form of support for your teammate, who won't be over-defending any attempts to feint by tricky opponents. It also fits Yoda's theme of foreseeing the future because now the players can see attacks before they happen. Finally, and most interestingly, this gives Yoda another way to trigger his other card effects since I've changed the phrasing on the rest of the cards to make them work when revealed anywhere. If you attack Yoda and run into Luminous Beings, you may be in for a big counterattack, as Yoda will be able to double up on any of his attack effects, granting 2 actions or 2 Basic Combat cards with one A6. Unfortunately, this version of the card still has the same problem the healing one did: it's situational. This is probably unavoidable because outside of drawing, forcing discards, or direct damage, I can't think of any more effects that are always desirable
I'd also like to touch on something a friend brought up about Yoda: his 1v1 potential. I actually think Yoda could prove to be a capable defensive brawler if the Yoda player uses all of his effects on himself. With the ability to sift through 20 cards of his draw pile, Yoda should play extremely consistently. Paired with Unlearn What You Have Learned, Yoda can end up playing only his best cards over and over, making his ceiling higher than it may appear. He also has Agen Kolar-esque combat card retrieval, making him difficult to wear down in a fight. Throw in an extra action here and there from Do or Do Not / There is no Try and a pair of Strong+ minors, and you're looking at some serious pain if that's Yoda's goal. And if the deck plays the way I expect it to, that's Yoda's real asset: his flexibility.
